A platform for refugee professors

“Here they are refugees, at home they were professor.” This line is the opener of the article “Van vluchtelingen kun je nog wat leren” in De Morgen. It tells the story of Background Educations’ Refugee Lectures.

We all know refugees bring a great deal of knowledge with them, but they hardly get a platform or the means to share it. It is something Background Educations strived to change in 2015 by starting the Refugee Lectures. A series of lectures in which refugee academics share their knowledge and stories with our course participants.

Hosted by your school, company or organisation?

After an engaging series of lectures in Brussels, a successful sequel in Ghent and a much appreciated third edition in Mechelen, we are ready for the launch of our own Refugee Lectures Platform. With this platform, we intent to enhance the impact of our Refugee Lectures by giving your organisation the chance to host your own lecture with one of our refugee lecturers.

Is your company, school or organisation interested in hosting its own refugee lecture? Contact one of our professors and book them for an inspiring lecture.

Note: check the possiblities for funding with your counsel or town.

A story of a Syrian Scholar

Syria is now the most dangerous country in the world. Without security, food, water, electricity, health care or education, many Syrian people suffer daily under war conditions. Half of the Syrian population are displaced outside the country. A hundred thousands of academics and students had to leave their country looking for a safe place to conduct their research and pursue their studies. The real situation of Syria and Syrian people is much more tragic.

To understand all that is behind the war in Syria and the actual situation, Kassem Alsayed Mahmoud, a Syrian academic, will share with you his real story in an evening lecture and will answer all your questions.

Insect Pest Control: Safe and Non-Toxic Methods

The urgent need for more and safer agricultural products, especially food, is rapidly increasing due to an increase of the global human population. Agriculture has suffered from multiple problems, a major threat being insects. These insects have been controlled with different methods mainly by using chemical insecticides. But many problems are associated with the use of these insecticides, such as the harmful effects of insecticides to our environment and non-target organisms including humans. In addition, many insects have developed resistance to these insecticides. These problems pushed researchers and entomologists to develop alternative methods for these chemical insecticides.

High-energy physics

High-energy physics is the study of the smallest components of matter and how they interact. For decades, the field explores the elementary constitution of matter and energy, the interactions between them, and the nature of space and time. These fundamental particles are the stuff from which our entire world is made. Invisible to the naked eye – so tiny that the most powerful electron microscope can’t see them – these particles, and only these, compose our homes, the cells of our bodies, and the warm rays of light on a summer’s day. Some are not even particles of matter: they’re bundles of pure energy. In studying them, high-energy physicists seek to learn what our world is made of, how it is put together, and how it works.

Cosmic rays

Cosmic rays are hitting the atmosphere of the earth from all directions with a power-law spectrum. Since their discovery, hundred years ago, many experiments have been studying the cosmic ray energy spectrum and composition. The origin of these very high-energy particles is still one of the biggest mysteries in high-energy physics. Many experiments study cosmic rays, a steady rain of high-energy particles originating in outer space, or neutrinos produced in nuclear reactions in the Sun.
